Syracuse NY held the top spot on most affordable homes, with some smaller housing markets following close by Mansfield, Ohio; Bay City, Mich.; Monroe, Mich.; and Lansing-East Lansing, Mich.  Lancaster says “Our market is greatly influenced by what happens up north, so the numbers out of places like New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio are encouraging,”. 

That is encouraging news when the news lately has not been so positive.

Wilmington NC is going to get it’s own state of the art  Convention Center.  After waiting for approvals and site plans, an opening date has been set for the Historic Downtown Wilmington Convention Center on the Cape Fear River. 

The grand opening is set for Thursday January 13, 2011 at 9:30 am.  The public is invited and there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony with the mayor and other community leaders.  Following the ceremony, there will be a BizTech Expo with technology and business vendors.  On January 15 a black tie event will be held by the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, with proceeds benefiting the Cape Fear Future initiative.  

A couple of big companies have signed contracts to hold their conventions here for the next couple of years.  This will bring added revenue to Wilmington NC and expose our area and all it’s natural treasures and great Wilmington NC real estate opportunities.

Starting April 5, 2010 the Government will be paying homeowners in default, to relocate. The new program will demand lenders to honor short sales whereby the homeowner can sell the property for less than the mortgage payoff. The Obama administration is trying a different approach to assist more than 5 Million households who are behind on their mortgages. In turn, the homeowner will receive $1500 for relocation assistance and the lender $1000 for expediting the short sale process.  

This arrangement could prove very beneficial to the homeowner, as they will not suffer further credit damage and they will get reassurance from the lender that they will not be sued for the balance. And, under this arrangement, the number of potential  foreclosed homes on the market should drastically decrease which in turn, should improve the  overall housing market.

The Pending Home Sales Index a “pending prediction” indicator based on contracts signed in April, rose 6.7 percent to 90.3 from 84.6 in March,
which is even above the April 2008 index of 87.5.

To get the first time home buyer credit of $8,000, contracts must be firmed up by November 30, 2009 to receive the credit, so we look forward to an increase in home sales.

1. I’m semi-famous. One of my several nicknames is Wilmywood and more than 300 films have been produced here since the 1980’s.
2. I raised Henry Bacon, the architect of the Lincoln Memorial. And when he died, he was buried here.
3. I’m getting fatter. My population has grown from 55,030 in 1990 to 90,330 in 2000. I’m expect to reach 99,781 next year.

5. I’m really into the arts, ever since I was little. Oscar Wilde, Charlie Daniels, Claude Howell, Robert Ruark and others are all buddies. And just recently I’ve decorated with some new sculptures downtown.
6. I love to go fishing. The state’s biggest flat head catfish was caught right here in the Cape Fear River. It was 78 pounds. The state’s biggest black drum was caught here, too. It weighed 100 pounds.
7. I’m athletic, too. I’ve been home to Michael Jordan, Meadowlark Lemon, Sonny Jurgensen, Roman Gabriel, Althea Gibson, Trot Nixon.
8. Sometimes I can be obsessive compulsive. Did you know there are exactly 19 seams in the bridge over Bradley Creek?
9. I’m super smart. UNCW has 73 undergraduate degree programs and 32 graduate degrees. About 11,840 students attend the college. Cape Fear Community College’s student enrollment in credit programs topped 7500 in the fall 2007 semester.
10. I don’t reveal my secrets to just anyone. Did you know miles of more than 100 year old underground tunnels criss cross in the streets downtown? They were originally drainage, but who knows what else happened down there.
11. I don’t like to talk about my criminal past. But did you know Stede Bonnet, the gentleman pirate was captured here?
12. One of the proudest moments in my life happened just last year when the nuclear fast attack submarine, USS North Carolina, was commissioned at my port.
13. I love to party! Next time you get a chance, come on down to my NC Azalea Festival, Riverfest, Fourth of July Fireworks display over the battleship or lighting of the World’s Largest Christmas Tree. Those are good times, my friends.
14. My parents had a hard time deciding what to name me. Originally, they were going to call me New Carthage. They they changed it to Liverpool, New Town, Newton and finally, thank goodness, Wilmington.
15. Years ago there was a rumor that I had more fast food restaurants per capita than any other city in the Union. Well, I don’t know about that. But I sure can cook. All the movie stars complement me on my restaurants including Cafe Phoenix and Deluxe.
16. I’m a tough old bird. I’ve survived a lot of hurricanes, held off German submarines during World War II, lived through race riots, doused huge fires and trudged through two feet of snow back in 1989. But I keep on truckin’.
17. Lately I’ve been socializing with a lot of Northern friends. But I’ve always kept my deep Southern ways–sweet tea, magnolia blossoms in June, Civil War re-enactments and some darn good oysters.
18. I’m a pretty likeable city, but I’ve kicked out a few blow-hards like Hazel, Bertha, Fran, Diana, Floyd and the list goes on.
19. I’m super stylish, I’ve changed my looks over the years, from dirt roads and buggies to brick streets and trolley cars, then asphalt and speedsters. I move with the times. I’m starting to get rid of those unsightly power lines, too, and put in some modern underground ones.
20. Don’t tell anybody. Sometimes I get dandruff. During the Spring you’ll find everything covered in yellow-green pine pollen. It’s embarrassing.
21. I’m short but you’ll never guess how short. I only stand about 30 feet above sea level.
22. I’ve served our country. One of North Carolina’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence, William Hooper, lived here.
23. When it comes to love, I’m ruthless. Back in the 1700’s, I stole away the entire population of Brunswick Town. It’s just a State Historic site now. They loved me better anyway.
24. Sometimes you might hear mysterious loud booms. Some people call it the Seneca Guns. But it’s really me having a tantrum.
25. I love to spill the beans, the Wilmington Star News is the oldest published newspaper in North Carolina.

Well, Wilmington NC has made the news again!  Google has added Wilmington NC  to their list of “Special Cities” for their new “Street view”.  Realistic  360*  views of streets  at eye level.  Last December the google truck was sited in our area, and one of the locals ran outside to take a picture of the truck with google logo and a camera perched on top, and sure enough he is in the google street view online.

1. Beautiful Beaches and Waterways

Wilmington NC is situated on the southeast coast of NC and is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and the west by the Cape Fear River. The beauty and charm of Wilmington and the surrounding beaches equal or surpass any on the east coast. Masonboro Inlet is located between the Southern tip of Wrightsville Beach and Masonboro Island. Also, the many creeks and bays located off banks channel and the waterways are a fisherman’s dream. 3. Masonboro Island

Masonboro Island is an 8 mile long uninhabited island on the southern North Carolina coast between Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach and is part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve. Masonboro Island, only accessible by boat, is enjoyed by campers, surfers, anglers, and bird-watchers alike. The reserve consists of about 5000 acres, which about 4400 acres are tidal marsh and mud flats. The most northern end at Masonboro Inlet is the most popular area with its sandy beaches and protected waters. Any summer weekend you will see many boaters and campers prepared for a few days on the beach with tents, grills and water toys in tow.

4. Historic Downtown Wilmington NC

Wilmington is blessed with a beautiful and extensive historic district with magnificent and stately oaks, azaleas and oleanders. 230 blocks of downtown are on the The National Register of Historic Districts. The city embraces a lot of history and is fortunate that so much has been preserved.

13. Thalian Hall Theater

Thalian Hall in Wilmington NC celebrated its grand opening October 12, 1858! 85 performances were presented that first year.  At the time, it was the largest Theater South of Richmond, Va. Thalian Hall was known by many names in its early days such as “The Wilmington Theater”, “The Opera House” and “The Academy of Music”. Thalian Hall today looks largely the same as it did in 1858, with its rambling ornate architecture.

14. Fort Fisher Aquarium

The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher not only displays an assortment of waterlife, but also focuses on conservation of aquatic environments. The Aquarium is open to the public and is available for private events.

25. Airlie Gardens

Gardens by the sea best describes the lush formal gardens, lakes and magnificent oaks draped with Spanish moss. Airlie Gardens is home to the Azalea Festival garden party with its collection of over 100,000 azaleas. Airlie is also a popular setting for weddings, Airlie concerts, Oyster roasts, and enchanted Airlie during Christmas starting in November.
